Our Spotlight Artist is upcoming artist J Rome. J Rome brings me back
to a time when there was no sound like the sweet sound of soul. Long
gone are the days of Motown that had folks dancing in the streets. Many
artists have been influenced by funky Motown beats, but it’s difficult
to find music that embodies the elements of soul, funk, blues and jazz
that made the music what it was. J Rome fills that void with an up to
date twist. This talented artist is just what we are looking for in
today’s music. J Rome has the potential to become; the new male vocalist
with the range of Mariah Carey, but the sound to captivate your hearts
like Robin Thicke. Here's more information about him.
My name is J Rome and singing has been my passion and my dream ever since I discovered I had a voice.
My beginnings were shaped by music’s greats. As a child, I remember sitting in the back of my mom and dad’s car while they listened to Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan Etc. and feeling inspired to express myself through song. Early on my family and friends labeled me “THE SINGER” after they noticed my natural affinity for music. My loved ones could attest that I have always been soft-spoken – shy even, but singing was my way of standing out.
Music has given me the opportunity to perform at countless venues and even travel the world, but most importantly, music has been my confidant. Music has uplifted me, guided me and given me a feeling of peace during the most trying times. I was told once; when I sing, I make others happy. If I am able to make a difference in the lives of others, with the talent God has given me, I am ready and the time is now.
I have been singing for as long as I can remember. I sang everything from Boyz II Men, Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey to Michael Jackson. Because of this, everyone in my family called me “The Crooner". I sang so much that people grew tired of it, and would tell me to "be quiet". Obviously, I didn't listen. Instead, I would just run off somewhere, and sing to myself.
As I got older, I sang at various events in my community, and became known to as “Jerome, The Singer". At age 11, my father took me to an audition for the Washington Performing Arts Society’s Children of the Gospel Mass Choir. Out of the 300 children that participated in this choir, I was handpicked by gospel legend, Richard Smallwood, to perform my very first solo. During the next seven years, we prformed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC; President Bill Clinton's Inauguration; Bill Cosby's Knnedy Center Honors Ceremony; and the grand opening of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain with of an audience of 10,000 plus.
I now sing and record my own material. My single "Against the Wall" with Interscope recording artist, Wale, made it to radio airwaves in 2008; I wrote, arranged, and performed the season theme song called "My 20" for Fox 5 TV; and I am currently working on my latest effort “Beauty is Beautiful” with a Grammy award winning producer and engineer.
I also had the amazing opportunity to perform in Michael Jackson's "Thriller Live" musical production. I started first as an understudy, and now I am one of the main principals for the UK touring cast. This has allowed me to perform in front of thousands of MJ fans in various arenas and on the "West End" - London's version of New York's Broadway Theater District.
Throughout all of this, one of my biggest supporters has always been my mother. From the day she
realized I could sing, she had me perform for anyone she thought could help me pursue a career in
singing. The only problem with this is whenever anyone asked me to sing, I would become shy. Even
to this day I still get nervous when I perform, but as my Nana told me when I was younger "That's just God's way of keeping you humble.”
